This Swine Life: Hog Named Six Seven Spared by Miami Dade County Mayor.
Although not quite at the same level as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor conducted a presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with obvious nods to the sheer volume of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the area's customary feast of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six seven” – inspired by a hip-hop line – often without clear purpose. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently made “six-seven” its 2025 word of the year.
A Peaceful Retirement
This particular pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the character of Miami: happy, diverse, and based in heritage that foster togetherness. Every time, we are honored to observe culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they celebrated the swine's new lease on life.
