The retail giant Enforces Buying Restrictions on Pokémon Trading Cards
As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing purchase restrictions on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy officially takes effect as of early November, based on an internal announcement distributed to employees.
Addressing Scalper Activity
Although not formally announced by Walmart, many believe this decision was influenced by a viral TikTok video that depicted a customer buying a massive amount of Pokémon card items at a checkout counter. The store manager seen in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.
Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses
The new restriction specifies that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. Yet, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. Precisely what counts as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five premium Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.
Additionally, because the restriction is based on individual trips, theoretically a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities over several hours.
The Reseller Crisis
For the average collector, this approach might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's common behavior. Over the past few seasons, speculators have greatly contributed to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.
Some resellers seek to sell unopened products at a markup, while others search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set is currently selling at prices exceeding eight hundred dollars on various platforms.
Looking Ahead
The new rule coincides with the imminent release of the latest Pokémon expansion, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show chase cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for nearly $1,500, emphasizing the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.
Hopefully, the retail limits will curb mass buying and increase access for true fans and everyday enthusiasts alike.
