Arsenal Football Club has officially announced that its contentious sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will come to an end in the coming June.

Origins and Examination

The partnership, said to be worth around £10m per year, was first established and has since come under fire.

This criticism stems from the country's reported backing for the M23 rebel group in continuing hostilities in the eastern region of the neighboring Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Months ago, Arsenal was accused of committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by not arranging a meeting with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to talk about the deal.

Agreement Framework and Goals

Visit Rwanda functions as a branch of the the country's development agency, which is a government department.

It is widely believed that Arsenal signed and continued this partnership chiefly to increase their African supporter base.

Nonetheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “mutually agreed” to part ways.

“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the primary aims of the partnership – promoting conservation and responsible tourism, encouraging numerous followers to discover the country, and building a solid groundwork for visitor increase,” declared an club announcement.

The release further noted that the partnership has also supported Rwanda's objective to emerge as an worldwide athletic destination in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing local football projects that have supported many aspiring footballers and coaches enhance their abilities and promote increased engagement in athletics nationwide.

Management Opinion and Fan Backlash

Richard Garlick, Arsenal's CEO, portrayed the arrangement as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “driving forward” the club's goals.

Yet this view was contested by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Gunners Supporting Peace staging protests outside the club's home ground during the first semi-final encounter in Europe's premier competition against PSG in the end of April.

Activists unveiled a placard declaring “End the Rwanda Deal” and distributed armbands to conceal the Rwanda branding on jerseys.

Industry Perspective and Fellow Clubs

Around that time, PSG continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda through 2028.

Simultaneously, Atlético Madrid inked a recent contract for the equivalent timeframe that has led to the emblem appearing on the Spanish club's male and female kits.
