The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Mechanics
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls within her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while other scenes show the protagonist navigating a abandoned chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core mechanic involves controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the lobby have large blooms growing from their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since every entity can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the true [soul] by your own actions," a voice states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on platforms.
