Ghostface Original Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.
The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is preparing for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter signals the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the last entry. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only fan-favorite characters making a comeback.
"Coming back to a character you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a daunting task that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.
An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters
Reports have confirmed that three distinct characters from past films are set to return in this latest sequel, despite dying in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection remains a mystery. Audiences should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal cop Dewey Riley, the filmmaker and third film killer Roman Bridger, and one half of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.
The Pressure of Iconic Legacy
For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a long-held wish, though he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the news from the series creator.
"I remember the conversation. I recall the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That moment is permanently etched on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the 1996 movie premiered, which left Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a part that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A character that is now represented in each and every Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."
The Anxiety of Disappointing the Fans
Now that filming has wrapped, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the final product. He admits to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "At the start, I don't know if the film will be successful. I am unsure if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen enough people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the reality is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the series. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"
Speculation and Excitement Abound
While countless dedicated fans are excited for Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Maybe they exist as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a previous plot device. Alternatively, maybe they are in some way still living in a strange communal situation. The possibility of a meta-horror narrative, reminiscent of classic horror movies, also is on the table.
Moviegoers will find out the truth when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
