Former Treasury Secretary Summers Leaves from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is exiting the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a batch of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He stated in an announcement that he was "thankful for the chance to have participated, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who formerly headed the prestigious university, stated on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public messages revealed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for accused sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the AI firm said it accepted his decision to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he offered to the governing body," the company remarked.
Congressional Action
This news comes after the entire Congress of the legislative branch decided on recently to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to disclose its documents on the case.
The measure will then move to the office of President Trump for signature. He has indicated he intends to approve the bill, after modifying his position on the subject following pushback from his base.
Message Details
A group of Epstein-connected emails released by the House Oversight Committee last week included multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the official to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the messages were released with the public, he said he took "full responsibility for my poor choice to maintain corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".
He continued that he desired "to rebuild confidence and fix connections with the individuals nearest to me".
Professional History
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; serving as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as director of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When declaring his departure from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Other Impacts
Following the economist's statement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in Washington where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that Summers was no longer associated with the institution.
Summers became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the language model, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to oust its chief executive Sam Altman.
